The Funeral Service of James “Jim” Lee Williams, Jr.
James “Jim” Lee Williams, Jr., age 87, of Monticello, formerly of Atlanta, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2025, at Southwest Christian Care in Union City, Georgia.
Jim was born in Rome, Georgia on August 12, 1937, to the late James Lee and Ada Hancock Williams. The family moved to the Atlanta area after the war and lived in Kirkwood. Jim attended school in Georgia and then moved to Alabama where he was living when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served with the Marines for four years active duty and two years in the Reserves at Dobbins in Marietta, Georgia. Since his family had moved back to Kirkwood while he was in service, he came back to his old neighborhood.
He began again attending church with his high school friends, and became reacquainted with a friend from school and church, Gail Johnson. They began dating and were married in May, 1962. They both found jobs in East Point so they lived there until their first daughter was born when they moved back to Kirkwood to be near family. When the computer industry began, Jim was working with the Federal Government and he saw an opportunity to begin a new career. He began training for his more than thirty years in the IT field. He enjoyed in the later years teaching Word Processing with Wang Laboratories in various sites here in the United States and internationally. He was recognized for his achievements as an instructor.
On the lighter side, he enjoyed refereeing little league football games. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle for his “alone” time as well as riding to benefit others, such as veterans, sick children and other worthy causes.
Jim and Gail were blessed with two daughters, Denise Leigh Williams and Kristi Williams Masdon (Jamie). They also “adopted” another daughter, Nancy (Larry) Griffin, and their sons, Travis (Aimee) Mumford and Michael (Taylor) Griffin. Many wonderful memories are treasured with these loved ones.
Jim and Gail moved to Jackson Lake for their retirement years, however, Jim decided to renew an old career choice. He obtained a position with Rockdale Hospital in Conyers as a Security Officer. He enjoyed meeting and talking with the many patients and coworkers as an understanding listener. Jim was also active serving the Lord at Monticello Baptist Church. He was a deacon and served as a substitute Adult Sunday School teacher. He also helped start a security program at the church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Gail Johnson Williams and great-granddaughter, Savannah Mumford.
He is survived by his daughters, Denise Williams of Decatur and Kristi (Jamie) Masdon of Griffin; “special family”, Nancy (Larry) Griffin, Travis (Aimee) Mumford and daughter, Charlotte, Michael (Taylor) Griffin; brothers, Jeff David “JD” Williams of Houston, Texas, Harold J. Williams (Lisa) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; sisters, June Williams Nelson of Braselton, and Grace Williams Sollar (Mike) of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews as well as wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Monticello Baptist Church. Rev. David Artessa will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M., Friday, April 11, 2025, at Jordan Funeral Home.
