Our Story

Founded in the early 1800's...

Monticello Baptist Church was constituted as Shoal Creek in the early 1800’s while this area was part of Baldwin County.  The church, located off Madison Highway 83, was a member of the Georgia Association.  In 1807, the State Legislature split Baldwin County to form Randolph (renamed Jasper in 1812) and three other counties.  On November 10, 1807, a committee appointed by the Georgia Association met and constituted 24 churches, including Shoal Creek, into the new Ocmulgee Association.  Our 63 members were now part of the 1200 making up the 5th Baptist Association in Georgia.

As Jasper County and Monticello grew & developed, the members of Shoal Creek built a new place of worship in the county seat of Monticello in 1826.  Our messengers to the Ocmulgee Association’s yearly meeting were recorded as being from Ephesus – Monticello. In 1828, the Georgia Baptist Convention held its 7th annual meeting at Ephesus, and Reverend Jesse Mercer served as moderator. In 1836, our Church joined the Central Association at its 3rd annual meeting and thereafter was referred to as Monticello Baptist Church.  In 1864, our church building was remodeled after Sherman’s forces ravaged the area during their march to the sea in Savannah.  When the Central Association met here in 1867, Monticello had only 18 members who met for church once a month.

In May 1901...

The original church building was torn down.  A new church building officially opened on June 25, 1902, for a Wednesday night prayer meeting.  Later, a pastorium and Sunday School classroom annex were added. This second Church building served its members and community for over sixty years.

In the 1960’s...

Rev. Francis Stewart led the congregation in establishing a church building fund.  In 1967, groundbreaking was held for a new brick building, and Reverend Dean Crocker led the congregation through the completion of the new building, which held its first service on May 28, 1968.

Major additions to the church were made in 1992, which included the Fellowship Hall, offices, and more Sunday School classrooms downstairs.  The last complete renovations to the church were made in 2003, with the most notable changes being the installation of an elevator and the remodeling of the sanctuary.
Our church is grateful for God's blessings over the past two centuries. However, we are not content to merely rest on the laurels of the past. Our congregation is deeply committed to doing more for the Lord, and we are excited about our role in His work, not just within Jasper County but also in spreading the Gospel beyond our borders.
